House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will win her party’s vote for House Speaker in Wednesday’s ballot, even though she’ll have a handful of people who will say they won’t vote for her during a floor vote, ex-House Speaker Newt Gingrich predicted Tuesday, adding that he would be “truly shocked’ if she does not win her bid.
“Their goal is never to beat her in the caucus,” Gingrich told Fox Business’ “Mornings With Maria.”“It’s impossible. She has many, many too many votes. Their goal is to say that they would withhold their vote on the floor and block her from getting a majority to be speaker when the new Congress meets. I think that’s an impossible strategy.”
Democrats have just own a big election, said Gingrich, and Pelosi raised more money than any other person for the candidates’ campaigns. He added that she has a nationwide network and has been “methodically picking off people” who started out opposing her, only to decide they “really like” her.
“I would be truly shocked if she was not the speaker, and I can’t imagine any Democrat who is going to vote to make Kevin McCarthy the speaker because he’s a Republican,” said Gingrich. “This is an interesting test of public relations, but the people who are saying they’re not going to be for her in the end are going to go home and say well, I really didn’t have any choice and so while I’m not happy, I voted for her. So if I were betting, she absolutely will be the next speaker.”
