Democrats who think they can impeach President Donald Trump based on testimony offered by the president’s former attorney Michael Cohen are living a “fantasy,” Rep. Chris Stewart said Thursday.
“The American people hear that and they go ‘you are going to impeach him for what? Other than you don’t like him?'” the Utah Republican, a member of the House Intelligence Committee hearing Cohen’s testimony Thursday, told Fox News’ Outnumbered Overtime” during a break in the closed-door proceedings.
Two-and-a-half years of investigations have not revealed anything against the president that would be impeachable, he added, and “most Americans” think it’s not fair that Democrats keep calling for proceedings against the president.
“I think it actually helps (him),” said Stewart. “So if your idea is to impeach and you lay awake at night frustrated because you don’t have evidence that would justify that now, then keep talking about it. Because I really believe it helps the Republicans.”
Stewart said he couldn’t comment on the closed-door proceedings, except to talk about how the hearing differs from the public meeting held on Wednesday before the House Oversight Committee.
“You can follow a trail of questions,” said Stewart. “It’s much more informative. You can dive down into some of these issues. I’m not speaking downstairs because I can’t comment on that, but I can speak generally.”
He did, however, point out that Cohen could not show evidence of collusion while testifying to the Oversight Committee.
“The Steele dossier was a piece of political garbage,” said Stewart. “If anyone believes in that now they’ve lost their minds. There is no evidence of obstruction.”
