The Green New Deal is a “big green bomb” that will eventually destroy the nation’s energy independence and economy, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said Thursday.
“This Green New Deal is a big green bomb that will blow a hole in our strong economy,” Sen. Barrasso told Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” about the sweeping environmental plan championed by several Democrats. “It will destroy the energy independence we now have from foreign countries. It will destroy what we have been doing to actually lower emissions. The cost to families, electricity alone would go up by about $3600 per family per year.
“This is something that we cannot as a nation afford. Our nation can’t survive it.”
The problem is it is a “pipe dream” that is being endorsed by several presidential candidates on the hard left, and it would “take our economy off the cliff” if approved, Barrasso said.
Meanwhile, the nation does have a strong, growing economy, Barrasso said.
“You saw the new economic numbers out today,” the senator said. “This is the first time in 13 years we have had over the course of a year and economic growth of over 3 percent . . . this is an absolute mistake, the so-called Green New Deal.”
Barrasso also Thursday commented on President Donald Trump’s decision to walk away from his summit in Hanoi with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong Un.
“The president did absolutely the right thing,” he said. “We need to eliminate nuclear weapons from the Korean peninsula. The president knows that. The American people know that. What he wanted was the relief of sanctions. The president said no.”
