But he was still climbing the famous steps towards the Royal Box when he saw captain Bryan Robson celebrate with the thousands at Wembley.

“As I was going up those steps, obviously I’d seen on TV and watched teams and players go up those steps many, many times at Wembley to receive the trophy,” he recalled to talkSPORT’s returning series Up Front With… to talk about his two spells at Man United, his unsuccessful spell at Barcelona and much more.

“As I’m just getting halfway up all of a sudden a big cheer goes up and I look across and Robbo has already got the trophy.

“And I’m thinking ‘oh for goodness sake I’ve missed it’. After all these years wondering and thinking what the emotion was going to be like when I lifted the trophy and I missed it.

“I made a vow that if I ever got back and was in cup finals again I would make sure I wouldn’t miss it.

“All the other cup finals I was involved in it was always the captain, the goalie and then me.”

Luckily for Hughes, though, he was victorious a further three times in FA Cup finals during his career.

He lifted it twice more with Man United, in 1990 and 1994, and once with Chelsea in 1997.

The Blues have the chance to win the FA Cup for the ninth time on Saturday as they take on Arsenal at Wembley, with commentary live on talkSPORT with kick-off at 5.30pm.
