Ally McCoist has laughed at rock and roll legend Sir Rod Stewart’s ‘nonsense’ claims that Rangers should ‘give’ the Scottish Premiership title to rivals Celtic.
Speaking to talkSPORT on Monday, boyhood Hoops fan Stewart accused ‘horrid’ Rangers of bad sportsmanship for not conceding the championship to their Old Firm rivals.
Celtic are 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership table, and there remains a great deal of uncertainty over whether the 2019/20 season will resume north of the border after the Scottish Championship, League One and League Two campaigns were all cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.
“I’ve got to tell you guys,” said Sir Rod. “You know all trouble that’s going on up there, if the shoe was on the other foot, and this was Rangers and Celtic were causing such a fuss, I’d be embarrassed.
“I would want Celtic to give Rangers the league if they were 13 points in front with only eight games to go. I think this is such bad sportsmanship, it’s horrid. I really mean that I would.”
But while Sir Rod wants to season to end and Celtic crowned champions for the ninth season in a row, Rangers legend McCoist insists ‘titles have to be earned’.
And the former striker says the race is not over yet, as Steven Gerrard’s side will have a game in hand if action resumes.
Ally said on Tuesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast, with a laugh: “That’s nonsense, absolute nonsense from Rod there!
“You can’t give anybody anything, you’ve got to earn it, you’ve got to win it.
“I don’t understand where Rod is coming from there in terms of causing all the hassle.
“Actually, Rangers and Celtic have been consistent in their views which are, if it’s possible they both want to season to finish!
“Rangers clearly want that to happen and I’ll tell you right now, so do Celtic!
“If you’re in Celtic’s shoes, having such an advantage, albeit they haven’t won it and there is still a chance that Rangers could catch them…
“But if you’re in Celtic’s shoes you’d still want the opportunity to win the league, and that’s all Rangers want.
“If there is an opportunity to play the games, then get them done.
“Rangers have not been critical of Celtic or any other team, Rangers have been critical of the SPFL and the way they conducted the vote and they’re 100 per cent CORRECT to be critical about that!
“There have been absolutely no discussions about giving a title, unless I’ve missed something.
“How can you give people titles? You don’t give people titles, they have to be earned and won!”
