Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang admitted he ‘should have scored a couple of goals’ following Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Benfica in the Europa League.

The Gunners captain missed two glaring chances in the first leg of the last-32 tie. The first saw him somehow put Hector Bellerin’s cross wide from six yards out wide with most of the goal gaping.

While the second wasn’t as clear-cut, Aubameyang should have done better as he failed to test Benfica keeper Helton Leite.

The striker latched onto a through ball but hesitated, which allowed Nelson Verissimo to make a recovery tackle before a shot was taken.

But fortunately for Aubameyang his fellow forward Bukayo Saka spared his blushes as he found the net when he got on the end of Cedric Soares’ cross from the left. And Aubameyang was grateful for his teammate bailing him out.

After the match, Aubameyang tweeted: “We deserved better and I should score couple goals today but still one game to go we keep going. Well done @BukayoSaka87”

Saka’s goal came moments after the Portuguese outfit took the lead when Pizzi scored a penalty after the ball struck Emile Smith Rowe on the arm.

Pizzi appeared to take inspiration from former Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes, doing the Manchester United star’s signature hop before sticking the ball past Bernd Leno.

Everton Soares almost gave Benfica the lead again when his curling effort soared over the bar but Arsenal had much better chances to win at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

Saka dragged wide after showing great skill to open up a chance for himself, while Aubameyang fired just wide from the edge of the box after being put through by the effective Martin Odegaard.

It’s certainly all to play for ahead of the second leg next Thursday.
