Montreal-based septet TEKE::TEKE have launched their debut album, Shirushi. Stream it through Apple Music or Spotify beneath.
TEKE::TEKE named themselves after a Japanese slang time period for these into surf tradition, which is an onomatopoeia that’s meant to sound like a surf guitar riff. Their sound is impressed by Nineteen Sixties and Nineteen Seventies period psychedelic Japanese soundtracks whereas mixing in trendy punk influences.
The nine-track Shirushi (or “indicators of nice adjustments to come back”) covers themes of identification, spirituality, rebirth, and self-exploration, that includes supernatural storytelling throughout its lyrics.
Within the case of “Barbara”, which we named Song of the Week final month, the monitor facilities on a being known as a Zashiki-Warashi, an impish childlike spirit that pulls pranks round a house. In the meantime, “Meikyu” tells the story of a younger character attempting to flee the grasp of a twisted spirit that took the type of a labyrinthe-like mansion.
