Generate Custom Affiliate Links With Rewardful

Rewardful affiliate links

A partner can send qualified traffic and still lose credit if the referral URL is wrong. The link needs the right token, the right destination, and a working attribution path.

Rewardful affiliate links give each partner a trackable route into your SaaS funnel. Set them up once, test them properly, and record where each link is published before you scale the program.

HOW REWARDFUL AFFILIATE LINKS WORK

Rewardful assigns an affiliate a unique referral token. The standard link structure adds that token with the via parameter to a landing page.

For example, a partner’s pricing-page link includes ?via=partner-token. When a visitor opens it, Rewardful records the referral and applies its cookie rules.

This is different from a regular URL parameter used for reporting. The via value identifies the affiliate. It is the part Rewardful uses for attribution.

Know what the cookie window controls

A cookie window is the period when a referred visitor can still be credited to the affiliate. Rewardful’s default window is 60 days, though you can change it for each campaign. Review the current Rewardful cookie window settings before you promise a term to partners.

A longer window may suit products with a longer buying cycle. A short trial-to-paid cycle may need less time. Match the setting to how customers actually evaluate your product.

A click is not a commission. Attribution only matters when the referral completes an eligible conversion within your campaign rules.

Start with the destination page

Send visitors to the page that matches the partner’s message. A product-review affiliate should not send traffic to your generic homepage if the review focuses on one feature.

Use a pricing page for pricing-focused promotions. Use a feature page for niche use cases. Use a webinar or demo page when the partner’s audience needs more education before signup.

The link can be correct and still perform badly if the landing page breaks the promise made in the affiliate’s content.

GENERATE REWARDFUL AFFILIATE LINKS FOR EACH USE CASE

Start in the affiliate record and confirm the person is assigned to the correct campaign. Their default referral link is the baseline link you should share first.

Create separate links when you need to compare placements, campaigns, or destinations. Do not create a new link for every minor content edit. Too many unlabelled links turn reporting into cleanup work.

Add useful destination links in the affiliate portal

Rewardful lets you provide extra destination links through the campaign’s affiliate dashboard text. Add a page URL and append the affiliate variable, ?via={{affiliate.default_token}}, so each affiliate sees a personal version of that link.

Common choices include:

  • A pricing-page link for comparison articles and review sites.
  • A free-trial link for newsletter promotions.
  • A feature-page link for a specialist audience.
  • A demo-page link for consultants or high-value B2B referrals.

Keep the destination and the partner’s promotion aligned. That improves conversion quality and makes your reporting easier to read.

Use the API when you need multiple managed links

A product-led SaaS business may create affiliates inside its own app or partner portal. In that case, use Rewardful’s affiliate link creation endpoint instead of manually copying links between systems.

Rewardful requires an affiliate_id when you create a link. You can supply a token or let Rewardful generate one. Tokens can contain letters, numbers, and dashes.

Additional affiliate links are available on Rewardful Growth and Enterprise plans. Check your plan before you design an automated link workflow.

CUSTOMIZE URL PARAMETERS WITHOUT BREAKING ATTRIBUTION

A custom link needs two jobs. It must credit the affiliate, and it should tell you where the click came from.

Keep Rewardful’s referral parameter intact. Then add standard campaign parameters after it.

Use UTMs for channel reporting

A link might include the affiliate token plus values such as utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. These parameters help Google Analytics or another analytics platform group traffic by channel and promotion.

Use a fixed naming pattern. For example, use the affiliate’s name for utm_source, partner for utm_medium, and a consistent campaign name for utm_campaign.

Rewardful does not use UTM parameters alone to track affiliate visits. The via parameter still needs to be present for normal referral attribution.

If you send traffic directly to Stripe Payment Links, review Stripe’s URL parameter guidance. Stripe can capture UTM campaign data, but analytics data does not replace Rewardful referral tracking.

Support old links only after a controlled migration

Some older affiliate platforms use ref=token. Rewardful expects via=token by default, so an old link can produce traffic without creating a referral.

Rewardful can accept other parameter names through the tracking script configuration. Follow its guide for tracking existing affiliate URLs before you change live scripts.

Do not change every legacy URL at once. Test one affiliate, one destination, and one browser session first. Keep the original link list and record which parameter format each partner uses.

TEST THE LINK BEFORE YOU GIVE IT TO PARTNERS

Never treat a copied URL as proof that tracking works. Test the full path before publishing the link in a partner portal, email sequence, or paid placement.

Run a clean-browser test

Open an incognito window or a separate test browser. Paste the exact Rewardful affiliate link into the address bar. Confirm that the page loads, the via parameter remains present, and the page’s signup or checkout path works.

Then review Rewardful for the new referral or visit. Use a test email address that is not already tied to another affiliate or customer record.

Check these points before approval:

  1. The link opens the intended page on desktop and mobile.
  2. The affiliate token matches the assigned partner.
  3. The campaign cookie window matches your program terms.
  4. The signup or checkout flow preserves attribution.
  5. Your reporting can separate the link’s placement and traffic source.

A completed browser visit proves only that the page opened. A recorded referral and an eligible test conversion prove more.

KEEP A LINK RECORD AFTER LAUNCH

Store one row for each affiliate link in a spreadsheet or database. Include the affiliate name, campaign, destination page, token, placement, UTM values, date created, and reviewer.

Do not overwrite the record when a link changes. Add a new row or version note. You need the old destination when a partner asks why clicks fell or a commission needs review.

Review results by approved customers and cleared commissions, not clicks alone. High clicks with weak conversions usually point to a poor landing-page match, a broken checkout path, or low-intent traffic.

FINAL CHECKS BEFORE YOU SCALE

Rewardful affiliate links work when the token, campaign, destination, and checkout path all agree. The link itself is short. The operating process behind it is not.

Create links with a clear purpose. Preserve the via parameter. Add reporting tags with a consistent format. Then test every important link in a clean browser before a partner publishes it.

A small, verified link set is easier to manage than hundreds of untested URLs.
