Set Rewardful Cookie Duration for Accurate Attribution

An affiliate can send a qualified visitor today, but the subscription may start weeks later. Your Rewardful cookie duration decides whether that affiliate still receives credit.

Set the window around the real buying cycle, not a number that feels generous. Then test the referral path before you invite more partners.

REWARDFUL COOKIE DURATION IS SET PER CAMPAIGN

Rewardful calls this setting the Cookie window. It defines how many days a referral click remains eligible for attribution.

The default Rewardful cookie duration is 60 days. You can change it for each campaign, which matters when your program includes different affiliate groups or offers. Rewardful confirms that referral cookies are configurable by campaign.

The clock starts after the referral visit

A visitor clicks an affiliate’s Rewardful link. Rewardful stores the referral in a first-party cookie. If the visitor becomes attributable within your cookie window, the affiliate can receive credit.

A 30-day window means a June 1 referral click is eligible through June 30. A conversion after that date falls outside the configured period.

Cookie duration is not a commission duration. A 60-day cookie can lead to a one-time commission, a recurring commission, or a fixed reward. Configure those rules separately.

Campaigns can use different windows

You don’t need one attribution period for every partner. Rewardful lets each campaign use its own commission structure and cookie window. Its campaign settings overview lists the Cookie window as a campaign-level control.

Use this structure when partner behavior differs:

  • Put content affiliates in a campaign with a window that matches your normal consideration period.
  • Put short-term launch partners in a separate campaign if the promotion has a shorter buying window.
  • Keep high-touch referral partners in their own campaign when their leads take longer to close.

Rewardful’s published cookie documentation does not list a plan-tier restriction for cookie-window length. Check your live account before you publish terms or promise a specific period.

SET THE COOKIE WINDOW IN REWARDFUL

Open your Rewardful dashboard and select Campaigns. Choose the campaign you want to update, then select Edit campaign.

Find Advanced Settings and locate Cookie window. Enter the number of days you want the referral cookie to remain active. Save the campaign.

Use this sequence before you change a live program:

  1. Review your affiliate agreement and find the stated attribution period.
  2. Check your trial length, sales cycle, and average delay between first visit and paid invoice.
  3. Update the Cookie window for the matching campaign.
  4. Record the old value, new value, date, and campaign name in your program-change log.
  5. Tell affiliates when the new rule applies.

Don’t assume a changed window rewrites the terms of clicks already stored in a visitor’s browser. Rewardful’s documentation explains the active setting, but does not state that edits retroactively change existing referral cookies.

That record matters when a partner questions a later commission decision. You need the campaign name, referral date, conversion date, cookie setting, attribution model, and final result.

CHOOSE A COOKIE WINDOW THAT FITS YOUR SALES CYCLE

Longer is not always better. A large window can increase payout exposure when multiple channels influence the sale. A short window can underpay affiliates who introduced a buyer early.

Use the customer journey as the starting point.

Start with the default when data is limited

A 60-day Rewardful cookie duration is a practical starting point for many SaaS programs. It avoids a rushed 14-day deadline while keeping the rule easy to explain.

Move to 30 days if customers usually subscribe during the first trial month. Extend the window when your CRM shows that qualified buyers return after several weeks.

Don’t choose 180 days because it sounds affiliate-friendly. First check how often customers return through paid search, direct traffic, customer referrals, or another affiliate link.

COOKIE WINDOWS AND ATTRIBUTION ARE SEPARATE RULES

The Cookie window answers one question: is the referral still eligible? The attribution model answers another: which affiliate gets the credit when more than one touch exists?

Rewardful provides First Touch Attribution and Last Touch Attribution in campaign Advanced Settings. New campaigns use first-touch affiliate attribution by default, according to Rewardful’s attribution settings guidance.

Pick the rule your partners can understand

First touch credits the affiliate who first referred the visitor. This works well when you want to reward discovery content, reviews, and educational newsletters.

Last touch credits the most recent eligible affiliate referral. This can fit promotion-driven programs where the final offer drives the purchase.

Write the rule into your affiliate terms. State the cookie window, attribution model, commission basis, refund treatment, and payout timing. Affiliates need to know what they are pricing into their work.

TEST ATTRIBUTION BEFORE YOU SCALE THE PROGRAM

A successful test proves the referral code was captured in your setup. It does not guarantee every future customer journey will attribute the same way.

Start with a controlled referral URL. Rewardful uses links such as ?via=affiliate-token. Open the link in a clean browser profile or after clearing the site cookie. Let the landing page load fully.

Then return to Rewardful and refresh the relevant view. Rewardful’s installation check commonly uses a ?via=install test link to confirm the tracking script is active.

Run inside-window and outside-window checks

Create a controlled signup or low-risk test purchase where your payment setup allows it. Confirm the affiliate and campaign appear as expected.

Test these conditions:

  • A conversion inside the configured cookie window should show the expected affiliate attribution.
  • A conversion after the window should not receive attribution from that expired click.
  • A second affiliate click should follow your selected first-touch or last-touch rule.
  • A refund should be checked against your commission and payout process.

Keep the original result. If a commission changes after a refund or correction, add an adjustment record instead of overwriting the first entry.

FINAL THOUGHTS

A clear Rewardful cookie duration protects both your margins and your affiliate relationships. Configure it per campaign, match it to how customers actually buy, and document the attribution rule beside it.

The strongest program is not the one with the longest window. It is the one your team can test, explain, and apply consistently.
